Royal Mail Calls for 6p Increase In Price Of Stamps
Royal Mail is set to call for a 6p rise in the cost of 1st and 2nd class stamps.
The company says it needs to counter the loss it makes on private postage, which amounts to a loss of 6p on every stamp bought.
Stamp prices were set by the official regulator Postcomm last year, and should stay at 32p for 1st class and 23p for 2nd class stamps. But Postcomm left an option to review prices in 2008, a review Royal Mail is urging it to conduct.
Community groups would critisise this inflation-busting rise, saying that the poor and elderly will be hardest hit.
Royal Mail is struggling to compete in bulk- mailing which accounts for about 90% of its business. It says other companies can offer better deals than Postcomm will allow it to do.
